Minnesota Fire Prevention Week

Oct 1, 2024 | Fire Damage Restoration

The 2024 Minnesota Fire Prevention Week is October 6th to 12th. This year the theme is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!". This annual Fire Prevention Week is about educating people on the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. Fire Prevention Week is a great reminder to ensure your home or business is protected from fire hazards. Here are some key tips to help you avoid fire damage.

By following these tips, you can significantly reduce the risk of fire and ensure the safety of your home or business.

Install and Maintain Smoke Alarms

  • Place smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • Consider interconnected smoke alarms, so when one sounds, they all do.

Practice Safe Cooking

  • Never leave cooking unattended, especially when using oil or high heat.
  • Keep flammable items away from the stove and have a fire extinguisher nearby.

Electrical Safety

  • Regularly inspect electrical cords and replace any that are frayed or damaged.
  • Avoid overloading outlets and use surge protectors.
  • Hire a qualified electrician to check your home’s wiring if you notice flickering lights or frequently tripped breakers.

Heating Equipment

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Have your furnace and chimney inspected and cleaned annually.

Proper Storage of Flammable Materials:

  1. Store gasoline, paint, and other flammable liquids in approved containers and away from heat sources.
  2. Keep your garage and basement clutter-free to reduce fire hazards.

Create a Fire Escape Plan

  1. Develop and practice a fire escape plan with your family or employees.
  2. Ensure everyone knows at least two ways out of each room and where to meet outside.

Use Fire-Resistant Building Materials

  • When building or renovating, consider using fire-resistant roofing, siding, and decking materials.
